The Insider

I had a doctor's appointment today and all seems to be well with the wee one.  The girls have never been to an appointment with me, however, I'm considering bringing them later on so that they can hear the heartbeat...so tonight we had this conversation:

Me:  Mommy needs to take you to my doctor's appointment so that you can hear our baby's heart beating and hear it moving around.

Emma:  Inside your tummy?  How can we hear it?

Me:  Yeah.  The doctor will put a little machine on mommy's tummy and we'll be able to hear it.

Madelyn:  We'll hear his heart and hear it talking to us?

Chad:  Yeah.  It's going to say, "Hey, let me out of here.  Pleeeeaassseee let me out.  I wanna get outta here.  Pleeeeeeease.  Maddie, give me your blankie....I want your thumb...give me your thumb....I want that thumb!"

She laughed but the look on her face said, "You must be crazy.  You ain't gettin' my blankie or my thumb."

City Girl

Tonight, while Chad worked on a sight word reader with Emma, I had Madelyn in the bedroom working on a deck of Brain Quest cards.  We flipped to one with a picture of a barn and farm animals and the question was, "What is this place called?"  She answered correctly by saying "a farm."  On the next card were three pictures and it went something like this:

Me:  What is this animal?
Madelyn:  A cow
Me:  What is the farmer doing? (he was milking the cow)
Madelyn:  (pause, then pointing to the final picture that showed an empty can and a can full of milk) That's pee-pee milk.

I guess we should get her out of the city a little more often.  And, yes, being the parent of the year, I laughed!

Money Lesson

We started reading a few new books about money that I got through the school's scholastic book fair.  I started with pennies and nickels.  After reading both books I asked Emma and Madelyn questions about the them to see what they had picked up on.

I found out that Barack Obama was the president on the penny and Andrew Jackson's house was called Montijello.

I guess we'll need to keep working on that.

Growing in the Garden

I am always amazed at what my kids say, but Emma has come out with some of the best things that I've heard in a while.  Yesterday, I went to Walmart, alone after having been with children 24/7 for the past 13 days, and Emma noticed the vacuum cleaner sitting where the Christmas tree once stood.  Chad took the tree out of the house on New Year's day and vacuumed the fallen needles.

She turned to Chad and said, "Daddy, are you finished with that vacuum?"

Chad said, "Yes, I am.  Why?"

Emma then said, "Then daddy, are you gonna let it sit there forever?"

I MUST add that I haven't mentioned a WORD about that vacuum and, honestly, had forgotten that it was sitting there!

Also while I was at Walmart, Chad and Emma were playing outside when she said, "Daddy, I want to grow a baby around here."

He told me this when I got home and I asked her questions about who would carry the baby in their tummy and what kind of baby it would be.  She decided that mommy would have the baby in her tummy and that it would be a pig baby.

Little does she know that that wish will come true in July!!!

Potato Head Pumpkins and the Sneaky Squirrel

Here are the girls' pumpkins from halloween. Chad did carve one with them, but this was WAY easier! The last picture is from the halloween party at school...don't they look like they love each other! Emma was very proud to show off her little sister!

We apparently have a squirrel trying to move in. He found the hole in the screen that one of his squirrel friends made a while back. Chad rigged it with some clear tape (it looked real nice, BTW) and the tape fell off. The squirrel found the hole and jumped right in. More than once. I guess we'll have a visitor until the screen is fixed.

The Call

So I got a phone call today from preschool. When the number came up on the callerID, my heart dropped. You never know what you'll hear. You never know what the news will be.

Me: Hello? holding breath
Mrs. Mary: Mrs. Jackson?
Me: yes

insert deep breath here, fearing the girls are ill or hurt themselves on the playground

Mrs. Mary: I'm calling to tell you that Madelyn....

Oh God, what happened I thought...

Mrs. Mary: Well, she decided to wash her hair in the bathroom sink today. laughing
Me: Oh, really! What did she say?
Mrs. Mary: Well, first it took all I had to keep a straight face, but then I asked her what happened and she said, "It just was like that." Hahahaha I asked her again and she said, "Well, my mommy does it."

Apparently after using the potty, she decided to pump a LARGE amount of soap into her hand, rub her hands together, and spread it all over her hair.......

...and today was PICTURE DAY!!!!!!!

Me: Well, at least you know that I wash her hair!

And before I could ask...

Mrs. Mary: At least it was AFTER her pictures this morning! hahaha I tried to wash it out, but the more water I added, the worse it got, so we are letting it dry. I won't be in the pick-up line today, so I wanted to tell you in case you didn't get the message from the other teachers. At least you'll know what's up with her hair!

You just NEVER know what 3-year-olds are capable of...

I would've taken a picture, but by the time I picked her up, her hair just looked messy. There really wasn't much to see!
